Of all bird dogs (as opposed to retrievers and spaniels),
the versatile HPR (Hunt Point Retrieve) breeds are increasing
in popularity, especially in mainland Europe and America. They
may lack the edge of specialist breeds like labradors ,
English springer spaniels and Gordon setters in their
respective specialist fields but, for the all-round sportsman
looking for an all-round dog, they have certain attractions.
The most popular breeds are the German short-haired
pointer, large munsterlander, Hungarian vizsla and weimaraner.
Although the breeds are very different in appearance, they all
reuire similar levels of care and training.
