The golden retriever in the shooting field tends to have
exactly the same duties as the labrador. Like the lab, it was
developed in Britain to meet the demands of driven game
shooting.
The "goldie" is perhaps a less suitable dog for the
beginner as they tend to be slower to mature than labs but
that factor does not detract from the enthusiasm that owners
have for the breed. It is also maybe less suited to being a
general purpose gundog as its long luxurious coat is not ideal
for hunting in dense thorn patches or retrieving ducks and
geese from the mud of coastal estuaries.

Like the labrador, the golden retriever can make an ideal
family pet for a person with a large house and the time to
give this breed the exercise that it requires.
